Official Press Release
Maureen Belko Announces Candidacy for Danville City Council
Danville, VA July 31, 2024: Maureen Belko officially announces her candidacy for the Danville City Council. A dedicated internal auditor and community advocate, Maureen believes it’s time for a change and is ready to bring fresh ideas to the council.
Concerned About City Spending
Provoked by inconsistent and narrow-sighted government spending, Belko is focused on promoting transparency, supporting community-based initiatives, and investing in local infrastructure. She believes Danville needs leaders who prioritize the needs of its residents. Unlike the current council, Maureen will focus on thoughtful spending and make sure the city’s budget benefits everyone, not just a few.
A Fresh Perspective on Danville’s Future
Maureen, 31, brings a deep love for Danville and an Economics degree from the Kelley School of Business to her candidacy. She has seen firsthand how the current leadership’s approach to budgeting has been mismanaged and unfair. Recently, the City Council approved a salary increase for themselves to $34,000 per person, meanwhile many full-time city employees still earn less. Maureen believes that Danville deserves leaders who will fight for fair wages and prioritize essential services over expensive, unnecessary projects.
A Commitment to Fiscal Responsibility
Maureen’s integrity and commitment to fiscal responsibility are exactly what Danville needs. The current council’s focus on expensive tourism projects has overshadowed the real needs of the community. Maureen will work to ensure that the city’s resources are used wisely and in ways that truly benefit the residents.
Active in the Community
Maureen has a strong track record of community involvement. She has served on the Danville Pittsylvania Community Services Board, and the West Side Community Council, and founded the Collidescope VA board. She is also a member of the Police Chief Advisory Committee, the Danville After-hours Rotary Club, and was an officer in the Danville Pittsylvania Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals. Additionally, she is a graduate of Leadership Southside and served as Vice President of Middle Border Forward. These experiences have equipped her to be a strong and effective advocate for the people of Danville.
